Given the foremost development-driving use case of the Tactical/In-Field/Storm chasing context (see https://wsv3-next-gen-2025.com/forum/d/6-high-level-philosophy-for-wsv3-next-gen-unpacking-tactical-mesoanalysis), it is absolutely required to have standard NMEA serial port GPS interface in WSV3 Tactical Mesoanalyst and Cartographer.
In the fall I bought a cheap USB GPS stick to test with when the time comes.
Developmentally, this should wait until I have a very polished HUD/text object rendering system. There needs to be an on-map GPS icon that is clickable to launch a pop-up window containing metadata like speed, heading, coordinates, etc.
This falls under the category of the many small but important things that must be carefully built closer to release, after the major high-ticket data display rendering algorithms and server ingest systems/streaming formats have been implemented.
However, please do use this thread as a place to leave notes on feedback, ideas, requests for an optimal GPS sensor integration. Right now all I have in mind are the obvious things, like option to lock map on GPS center, clickable info box popup with GPS data, etc.
Paul In particular I envision there being a prominent tool window for "tactical insights" or "spatial analysis" or something of the like, which offers functionality referencing different layers/systems. Such as, computing distance from point (could be cursor point, or GPS point, etc) to some vector feature. E.g., for tropical layers, I thought of a tool where rolling over a point shows a line to the nearest forecast track point, distance, and closest approach time. Similar concepts could be applied to the GPS point and other path information, such as MST, L3 cell vectors, or NWS warning vectors. Some variations on this concept could apply to static mapping data, e.g., distance to coastline, max elevation in radial distance, etc.
I am aware of the heightened requirements associated with building tactical-grade software for the first time. Right now that only manifests in performance-oriented development, but once the engine is done, it will manifest in the creation of specific embedded functionalities which cross-reference separate systems and data objects. This is a very exciting set of concepts, but one I can only sit down to fully expatiate once most of the data assets are already integrated. In this way, I expect perhaps some of the best new features will come very late in 2025 in the very final pre-release stages, only when all the base data is in and working, and I can step-back and critically analyze opportunities for interactions between systems and data.
Ok thanks Paul, your ideas on it sound absolutely fine. The GPS monitor still works fine on v5.9 but the betas it has stopped working. I'll carry on using 5.9 now whilst driving. I just didn't ultimately have to resort to using Radar Omega!
I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few chasers dump GR and use WSV3 instead especially seeing they can subscribe just for the months they plan to use it. I know the guy who narrates Reed Timmers live YouTube feeds predominantly uses WSV3 to display the weather information.

Tim Tim, please follow up with me over email or first-gen WSV3 forums if indeed the new V7 release doesn't any longer work with the GPS receiver. There should not have been a change in functionality and I could make sure it is the same as before.
Chasers need a tactical-grade product. Many chasers still use GR because they formed their own conclusion that WSV3 Professional, the first generation product, did not pass muster. I also see people stream with WSV3 Professional on YouTube for hours on end with no issues. So, there is a diversity in opinion. But the opportunity to restart from scratch with WSV3 Tactical 2025, with specifically the in-field use case listed as the cornerstone development-driving use case, will be a game changer. I am confident it will become the unanimous tool of choice.
