This post continues my description in Item #3 of my high-level design philosophy post, about how the use case for professional meteorological workstations needs to support multiple panels/windows like AWIPS.

WSV3 next-gen needs to offer this advanced professional functionality and further the state of the art by allowing the fusion of weather-map-state and user-interface-layout-state into reproducible workflows.

I am thinking of a notion of a "map" and a notion of a "mapset".

WSV3 2025 aims to have a fully flexible, resizable, dockable, tabbed windowing system where UI panels and map graphics output windows can be arranged into limitless combinations.

The initial work in early September began on nothing other than this base infrastructure.

The traditional notion of "quad/dual panel" display does not suffice for a generic windowing system where different maps can have different camera views and even different timeline states (this is key).

The traditional notion of "quad/dual panel" display is valuable narrowly in the raster data context where the same view and same timestamp can be juxtaposed across 2 or 4 related raster parameters. WSV3 2025 must:

Allow for multiple maps with different camera views, layer/data content statuses, and timeline states
Allow for a unified raster engine unifying all GRIB2 mesoanalysis and model raster parameters in one multi-pane case, and NEXRAD Level 2/3 products in the other
Allow for dual or quad probe point simultaneous real-time display of same-point data value in the other 1 or 3 panels
Allow for multiple raster product display in color fill, vector field, and/or contour display, in either 1, 2 or 4 panels per map
Allow multiple maps to have 1, 2, or 4 panels for compatible raster layers at the same time
Allow all of these various configuration states to be saved and reproduced on demand to enable complex analytical workflows at the touch of a button
